Wells Fargo Active Cash Card Full Review

Card Type

The Wells Fargo Active Cash Card is a cash back credit card with a flat rewards rate on every purchase. It also offers an introductory 0% APR.

Annual Fee

There’s no annual fee required to carry the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card, which makes it a smart option if you want a credit card you can keep for the long haul.

Welcome Offer

When you sign up for the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card, you get the chance to earn $200 in bonus cash when you spend $1,000 within three months of account opening.

Introductory Offer

The Wells Fargo Active Cash Card gives new cardholders 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months, followed by a variable APR of 14.99%, 19.99% or 24.99%. This introductory offer is excellent for people who want to consolidate debt or pay down large purchases over time.

Rewards

With the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card, you’ll earn a flat 2% back on all purchases, which is one of the best cash back rates among any card with this rewards structure. Many other cards that offer flat-rate rewards on purchases only give 1.5% back at most.

Most directly, this card rivals the Citi® Double Cash Card. Both earn unlimited 2% cash rewards, but the Citi card rewards 1% as you make a purchase, and the other 1% only when you pay it off.

You can redeem your Active Cash Card rewards in a few ways: toward recent purchases on your statement, into a Wells Fargo account, at an ATM, or for gift cards.

Fees

There’s no annual fee for the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card, but there are other fees to consider. You’ll pay a 3% foreign transaction fee if you use your card abroad, and a 5% (minimum $10) cash advance fee for using your credit card to get cash at an ATM.

If you take advantage of the card’s 0% APR on balance transfers, you’ll also pay 3% (minimum $5) within the first 120 days of account opening, after which the balance transfer fee increases to 5% (minimum $5).

Other fees to watch out for include a late payment fee and returned payment fee, both of which can be up to $40.

Other Benefits

The Wells Fargo Active Cash Card comes with a handful of added benefits beyond cash rewards, including cellphone protection worth up to $600 (subject to a $25 deductible). You’ll also get access to Visa Concierge Service, emergency cash disbursement and card replacement, travel and emergency assistance services, and roadside dispatch.

Benefits of Wells Fargo Active Cash Card

The biggest perk of the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card is its simple rewards structure and big potential savings. Depending on how much you spend throughout the year, unlimited 2% cash back on every purchase could net hundreds in annual rewards.

The card’s great welcome bonus also gives it a boost over the Citi Double Cash, which doesn’t have a welcome offer. You can earn $200 in bonus cash when you spend $1,000 on your card within three months of account opening (equal to about $333 each month).

The 0% APR offer on this card is pretty good, but note that a variable APR of 14.99%, 19.99%, or 24.99% will apply to balances you don’t pay off within the introductory period. And if you need to consolidate debt with a balance transfer, make sure you transfer the debt within 120 days to secure the lower balance transfer fee of 3% (minimum $5).

Drawbacks of Wells Fargo Active Cash Card

It’s hard to complain too much about the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card. You can earn unlimited, flat 2% rewards with no annual fee, and you redeem your rewards in more than one way.

One downside is the fact that you have to pay a foreign transaction fee on purchases you make abroad, so this card isn’t a great choice for international travel. And if you plan to use this card to consolidate debt, or you have more debt than you think is realistic to pay off in 15 months, there are other balance transfer credit cards with longer introductory 0% APR periods.

How to Use Wells Fargo Active Cash Card

For the first three months after you open your account, keep up with your purchases to make sure you’re on track to spend at least $1,000 and qualify for the extra $200 in bonus cash. While you shouldn’t spend more than your budget allows to score a bonus, this can be a great boost to your rewards.

Since the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card is a flat-rate cash back credit card, maximize your rewards over time by using it as your primary card for regular spending. If you have other rewards or travel credit cards in your wallet already, use this card for any purchases that aren’t covered by higher-earning bonus categories.

If you plan to utilize the 0% APR offer on this card, keep in mind that it only lasts for 15 months. Before you apply, have a plan to pay your balances off before then, or else you’ll pay down your debt at a high variable APR.

Is the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card Right for You?

The Wells Fargo Active Cash Card is ideal for anyone who wants the simplicity of flat cash back on every purchase, or those who want to secure 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for a limited time. It’s not the longest intro period available, but if you’re looking to pay off debt but also maintain long-term value on your spending, this card can offer a great deal on both.

Wells Fargo Active Cash Card can also make a great match for other cards in your wallet with bonus rewards focused in specific categories. If you already use the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, for example, for your spending at U.S. supermarkets, gas stations, and on streaming services, the no annual fee Active Cash Card can guarantee you’re getting a good return on every purchase that falls outside of those categories.

Even so, it never hurts to compare other rewards credit cards with different earning rates or benefits. Make sure to look over all the top credit card offers before you decide.
