9 things to know this week in Meriden, Wallingford, Southington, Cheshire

Things to know this week include possible action on the creation of a Civilian Review Board for police use-of-force incidents in Meriden, the election of leaders for the Southington Board of Educaton and Planning & Zoning Commission and two walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinics in Wallingford.

Meriden’s legislative delegation will hold a virtual town hall meeting in conjunction with New Opportunities for Greater Meriden to discuss heating, energy and food assistance available to the community. 

Here’s the full list of nine things to know locally as you start your week.

1. Possible action on Civilian Review Board in Meriden 

The Meriden City Council will meet in person at Lincoln Middle School Monday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting can also be viewed in real-time through the city’s website.

The agenda will include action on the proposed Civilian Review Board to review police use-of-force incidents, along with a resolution to adopt the Economic Development, Housing and Zoning Committee’s recommendation for a zoning amendment to permit cannabis microcultivators.

The council will also decide whether to allocate federal American Rescue Plan Act funds for the installation of a new air handling system at the Meriden Public Library, for the fire department’s purchase of a fire pumper and to fund the position of Meriden Application Assistance Administrator. The council is also scheduled to take action regarding proposed new contracts with its municipal employees and supervisors unions.

2. Planning & Zoning, BOE leadership in Southington

Southington’s Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to meet Tuesday, the first meeting since Election Day when the commission’s Republicans maintained their majority. The commission plans to meet on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at the John Weichsel Municipal Center, 200 N. Main St. The commission will vote on officers such as chair and vice chair.

Southington’s Board of Education also has its organization meeting scheduled this week after Republicans kept a majority of the board. The education board is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at the John Weichsel Municipal Center, 200 N. Main St.

3. Public Utilities Commission in Wallingford

The Wallingford Public Utilities Commission is scheduled to meet Tuesday 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall Room 315 to discuss customer appeals, a budget amendment for transformer procurement and use of the remaining CMEEC refund, as well as meet in a closed-door session to discuss a project regarding the Pierce Plant.

4. Tweens, teens talk in Wallingford 

Wallingford Youth and Social Services is hosting a virtual session for parents in improving communication with tweens and teens 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. To register, call Youth and Social Services at 203-294-2175 or email [email protected] A Zoom link will be send the morning of the presentation.

5. Walk-in COVID vaccine clinics in Wallingford

The final in a series of walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinics hosted by Hartford Healthcare is scheduled for 12:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Oakdale Theatre, 95 S. Turnpike Road, Wallingford. No registration necessary — Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson offered. Booster/third dose vaccines administered per CDC and DPH guidance.

The Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club and the Spanish Community of Wallingford are sponsoring a free walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinic for children and adults 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at SCOW, 284 Washington St. No appointment needed — Pfizer offered for ages 5 and older, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson for ages 18 and older. 6. Cheshire Town Council considers board consolidation

The Cheshire Town Council will convene for a regular meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Councilors consider joining ongoing legislation regarding opioid addiction, action on engineering services for the expansion of Bartlem Park and a bid waiver for fire department vehicles. The council will also discuss merging the Prison Advisory Committee with the Public Safety Commission and combining the Energy Commission and the Environment Commission.

7. Subdivision, pollinator pathway in Cheshire

The Cheshire Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission will evaluate a handful of permit applications for developments in town during its Wednesday meeting, scheduled to begin at 7:30 at the Town Hall. Pinnacle Land Development LLC is seeking to construct a subdivision at 791 Coleman Rd., and the Coalition for a Sustainable Cheshire is seeking approval of a site plan on North Brooksvale Road, where it has been working on a pollinator pathway. C-Tec Solar LLC is also seeking a permit application at 5 McKee Place.

8. Meriden school administrators contract

On Tuesday, the Board of Education will meet in person at Edison Middle School. That meeting starts at 6 p.m. 

According to a posted meeting agenda, the board is scheduled to discuss, in executive session, and take possible action, in open session, on its contract with the Meriden Administrators’ Association union.

9. Meriden legislators to discuss community resources

Members of Meriden’s state legislative delegation — state representatives Cathy Abercrombie, Michael D. Quinn, Hilda E. Santiago, Sen. Mary Daugherty Abrams — will hold a virtual town hall meeting through video conference later that evening. Also participating will be Dona Ditrio, executive director of New Opportunities of Greater Meriden, to discuss the availability of community resources to residents who may need them: including heating, energy and food assistance.
